Hydroxypropyl Methyl Cellulose (HPMC)

Hydroxypropyl Methyl Cellulose (HPMC)

With its five core properties of thickening, water retention, bonding, film-forming and suspension, HPMC is widely used in construction, pharmaceuticals, food, daily chemicals, chemical engineering and other industries.

Construction & Building Materials (Largest Application Sector)

  • Cement mortar / plastering mortar: Acts as a water-retaining agent and retarder. Prevents rapid water evaporation or absorption by the base course, avoids cracking, prolongs working time and improves strength.
  • Putty powder, gypsum putty: Serves as a thickener and binder. Improves scraping workability, prevents sagging, enhances sanding performance and avoids chalking after drying.
  • Tile adhesive / stone adhesive: Provides water retention, thickening and anti-sagging effects. Boosts adhesion, prevents hollowing and falling off of tiles, and reduces cement consumption.
  • Self-leveling flooring, caulking agent: Controls fluidity, prevents sedimentation, and improves surface flatness and strength.

Pharmaceuticals (Pharmaceutical Excipients)

  • Tablets: Used as a binder (for forming powder into tablets) and film coating agent (moisture-proof, taste-masking and aesthetic).
  • Sustained / controlled-release tablets: Functions as a matrix material. Forms a gel layer when exposed to water, controlling slow drug release and prolonging efficacy.
  • Eye drops / artificial tears: Acts as a thickening lubricant. Extends residence time of the solution on the ocular surface and relieves dryness.
  • Suspensions, ointments: Provides thickening, stabilization and suspension effects to prevent stratification.

Food Industry (Food Grade)

  • Thickening, stabilizing and emulsifying: Applied in jams, ice cream, beverages and sauces to prevent stratification and improve taste.
  • Baking: Enhances dough extensibility, prevents bread collapse and improves softness.

Daily Chemicals & Cosmetics

  • Skin care products, shampoo, body wash: Delivers thickening, stabilizing and emulsifying effects to improve texture and spreadability.
  • Toothpaste: Acts as a thickener and binder to stabilize the paste and suspend abrasives.
  • Hair gel, mousse: Forms a film for styling and maintaining hairstyles.

Other Industrial Applications

  • Coatings / inks: Provides thickening, dispersing and anti-settling effects, improving leveling and gloss.
  • Ceramics: Used as a binder to form ceramic green bodies, which burns out easily without residue after drying.
  • Textiles: Serves as a sizing agent and printing thickener to enhance yarn strength and prevent printing bleeding.
  • Paper making: Applied in surface sizing and coating to improve paper strength and smoothness.
